Translation Progress

UPDATE ON TRANSLATION…

We praise God for the progress going on with the translation lately. Bill finished the first draft of the final chapters of Luke last week before the four Palawano men arrived. While they were here, he went over those chapters with them, as well as various revision steps on the earlier chapters. Six full days of work, but encouraging both in terms of how much was accomplished as well as how well the translation is communicating. Donna worked with Susing some each day and got some good oral drafting recorded on a number of chapters.

Now, until the next batch of translation helpers come up, we are reworking some of the middle parts of Luke while Bill is drafting 1-2 Timothy.

HEALTH UPDATE…
It’s been two years since we were dealing (unsuccessfully!) with Bill’s kidney stones. So he just followed up with a doctor and the ultrasounds show that the stones are still there and they have grown larger. There is the original one on the left side, and the two pieces of the one on the right (it split but did not shatter or pass through). They cause mild discomfort sometimes, but so far nothing worse.

UPDATE ON PIDI
Many of you have been praying for Pidi and asking about him. It looks like he will be coming up this week for surgery on his melanoma. Most likely he will lose most or all of his foot, but he is willing since the pain is so bad now. What is needed is a second Palawano companion to come up with him while traveling and taking turns sitting with him in the hospital.

PLEASE PRAY…
Every update we ask for your prayers for the translation work. It is so vital that the Lord keep us focused and healthy, full of energy and wisdom. It can be tiring work, and of course our enemy does not want to see God’s Word completed for the Palawanos. Pray especially that God would give Bill insight into his Word and into the Palawano language as he drafts 1-2 Timothy, so God’s message will come through clearly!

Please also pray that Bill’s kidney stones would not cause too much discomfort or a health crisis. We’re asking God to allow them to “behave” until some time in the future when we can afford the time and expense of dealing with them once and for all.

Pray for a second companion for Pidi and for his surgery and recovery. Pray, too, that we can easily find a donor for any blood he might need (in the system here, you do not buy blood from the hospital, you have to go find a willing donor with the correct blood type.)

Publishing Ephesians & 1 Peter

NEW SCRIPTURE IN PALAWANO!

Today we heard back from our translation consultant and all the pending revisions to Ephesians and 1 Peter have been approved. This means that the consultant check of those books is officially “done” and we can print and distribute copies to the Palawanos.

This is very exciting news!

Imagine reading those two amazing books right now for the first time ever… hearing God speak all those encouraging and motivating truths.

We have just a few editing details to clean up and the books will be formatted into booklet form and we’ll get some copies out and in use in the churches.

Thanks to all who prayed to see this task accomplished!

THE WORK GOES ON…
Meanwhile, we continue to make good progress on the book of Luke. Donna had a very profitable week doing recording, getting way more chapters completed than we had hoped. Thanks for praying for that, as well!

Bill is drafting the final chapters of Luke and getting ready for our next consultant check. When the drafting of Luke is completed, he’ll be starting to draft 1-2 Timothy and Galatians while we finish the final steps on Luke.

PLEASE PRAY…
Don’t stop praying, now! Please continue to pray for us as we push ahead in the translation

Revising Luke… and Cancer Patient

WORKING ON LUKE…
This week we have 4 of our Palawano translation helpers in town for intensive sessions of working on Luke. The guys will be working with Bill, drafting, revising and reworking passages from many chapters. The men will also help Bill to finalize the last few pending revisions on Ephesians and 1 Peter so those two books can be printed and distributed!
Donna will be working with one of the men (Susing) for a few hours each day, recording his oral retelling of the passages, a technique which helps us to get smooth natural flow in the written translation.
AND HELPING A PATIENT…
We also have another Palawano man and his companion in town to see the doctor. Donna will be running them to and from doctor’s appointment and, eventually, the hospital. Pidi will most likely need major surgery as the painful, horrible growth on his foot is almost certainly melanoma, and even seems to have spread to lymph nodes in his thighs. A biopsy tomorrow will confirm that.
PLEASE PRAY…
So please pray for us this week as we need lots of energy, wisdom, patience and compassion. Pray for good progress on the translation and for Pidi’s medical condition and even more, that he would put his faith in Christ.

Update on Nili

IMPROVING
…THANKS TO YOUR PRAYERS!Nili has stabilized and was released from the hospital and she’s breathing well now without oxygen.

She is on several new medicines which have her blood pressure down in the normal range.

Now we’re waiting for the results from an echocardiogram taken yesterday. She’ll see the doctor again tomorrow and we’ll know more about the causes of her symptoms and discuss the doctor’s plans are for long-term maintenance.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY…
Please pray for healing for Nili, wisdom for the doctors and pray for her husband Odi and their family.

Scripture Distribution

GOING BACK IN TIME…
Last week we were blessed to be able to take a quick trip south down the west side of the island of Palawan. We went along with a ministry trip of the college age youth of our church here in Puerto. There were planning to hold VBS and do door-to-door witnessing in a small (very small!) town along the road. And they asked Ate (big sister) Donna and Kuya (big brother) Bill to come along as they wanted to make a day trip to visit and encourage Palawanos upriver from the town and they needed us to interpret for them.
We stayed with Filipino Christians in the town along the road where the Puerto youth were doing their ministry. From there, we hiked with them into the Palawano village of Pengdan. There is a Palawano church there with Palawano leaders and teachers and several ongoing outreaches. This church is the fruit of the ministry of some Filipino missionaries who were there in the late 1970’s. Bill first went there on a survey in 1990. And the last time he visited there was in 1991 when he taught through the gospel of John, which was newly-translated at that time. We wanted to reestablish our relationship with this church and see how they were doing.
Since it had been nearly 20 years since Bill was there, most of the men who were leading the church in 1991 were now either very old or had passed away. But the next generation has grown up to carry on the ministry. Bill was excited to learn that Joshua, a church elder in his early 30’s, was the 14 year-old boy that had guided Bill and the others on the survey in 1990! He had played in the river with them and had jokingly called Bill and Ben Gribble buaya (“crocodiles”)! Now he was the father of four and a faithful leader of the church in his father’s stead.
Now fast forward to 2009. We returned to Pengdan, not knowing what we might find. It was so encouraging to see that while there are needs, the church is still functioning on its own!
We were able to give the Pengdan church copies of our worship songbook (now with 76 songs), including chord books for guitarists, and booklets containing Colossians, Philippians, 1-2 Thessalonians, Titus, James and the newly-translated book of Acts. They were really excited to get so much more of God’s Word to study!
We accomplished another goal with this trip by meeting and making connection with Filipinos Christians and churches along the road. We want to build a network of churches who have contact with Palawanos, as this will lead to supportive relationships for the Palawano church, and having these contacts along the roads will facilitate our distribution of Palawano Scripture, songs and teaching materials. Beyond our expectations, God also led a pastor from another nearby town to sit by Donna on the bus. When he found out about our ministry, he was asking for materials he can distribute to the Palawanos he comes in contact with. Praise God for orchestrating all this!
LOOKING AHEAD…
We plan to send copies of Palawano materials to that Pastor we met on the bus this coming week. We will also keep in contact with our new Christian friends in that small town, and the Palawanos in the village of Pengdan, sending them copies of Ephesians and 1 Peter in a few weeks, when the final revision of those books is completed.
We praise God for his faithfulness and for the chance to put his Word into an ever-larger number of Palawanos’ hands! And you are a part of this through your prayers and partnership with us.
CONTINUE TO PRAY…
Please pray for us as we continue to labor at translation, pushing toward the completion of the Palawano New Testament. Pray for health, energy and wisdom for this task.
We praise God for how he has been providing for the needs of this ministry. Please pray with us now that we can complete the work on the living quarters for our Palawano translation helpers who come to town to work with us. Each month, through special gifts, God has also been providing the way for us to make payments on the vehicle we purchased from another missionary. Please pray with us that we can soon pay off the balance.

-Bill and Donna

Home, Sweet Home

QUICK UPDATE…
It’s so great to be home!
Praise the Lord for safe and uneventful travel to the USA. It has been wonderful to see our kids and all the rest of the family. We were even here in time to celebrate our nephew’s 23rd birthday last night. He was born the day we arrived in San Diego on our first home assignment in 1985! Wow.
We are overwhelmed by the Lord and his people… through the gracious generosity of two families, the Lord has provided two cars for us, both economical (!), to use while in the USA. This is such a huge blessing for us and beyond our prayerful expectations!
CONTINUE TO PRAY…
Please pray with us as we seek the Lord and ponder how the current political situation on Palawan may affect our plans and ministry allocation. And ask God to keep the Palawano believers safe in these troubled times, and that their faith might remain strong and active!
